I think you missed something about "what do I have to do to be able to use them?"

You have to buy them on the auction page.

The magnet makes all point balls fly towards you, but it sounds more helpful than it actually is since the first point ball that hits you shoves you away so that most of the others miss you. Waste of points in my eyes, same with nitro. The only really useful ist the recharge. So buy recharge as soon as you can and then save for MT-Passes.

i concur with electriczax: how do you use an item? i have at least one recharge thing. and can you have more than one?

You can only have one powerup per type and you can use it only one time. It will be available again when you return back to level 1.

And what exactly is the MT pass for?

You can put it's code in the phone's slot. On different games, you can get different things. http://www.mtpass.com/help

Yes, you can use every powerup just once per run.
