I heard they are apples... and since all enemies are fruits and tomatoes are cegetables, it makes sense

Now that you mention it, yeah, all the baddies are fruits. I am just not paying attention.

technically, tomatoes are fruits too. Same with pumpkins.

Anything with a seed is a fruit, I think. I still hate them when they kill me.

Well... when you eat them you "use" them as vegetables though they are fruits... so a tomato is both

You (or at least I) eat them for example in salads, which I would rarely do with other fruits, but with vegetables
