What are they useful for?

The

let's you drop 2 bombs instead of one.

The black one let's you drop even more, I think around 5.

And if you complete the

Zodiac quest (Book of Stars), you get one additional bomb, so the lamps give you 3 or 6 bombs.

actually, I thought the

still gave you 5 bombs if you complete the zodiac quest.

You can test it if you get the green mines... I did, and you get six bombs
