I think I found a way... If, after failing the jump, you just stand there and wait, the flame will come and kill you. You then respawn near the top of the screen, giving you another chance at the jump.

I have an even much more brilliant idea!!!
If you fail that jump, take the crystals before the button, then jump up in the air right before the button and bomb jump forward - so that u jump over the button without hitting it, the bubble doesn't appear and you can freely take the joystick!!!
But... of course it's pretty hard and if you fail and hit the button - nothing will let u get the joystick, but at least that way you don't have to die... so it's a risk BIG RISK!!!

No, no, no....

The game is programmed to have the portal appear when you go anywhere NEAR the button, so it doesn't matter what silly jumping tricks you try to get .

BTW; on a slightly related note, the evil spike on the 9th level of Hell is a lot easier in Nightmare Mode due to this trick

Made my way to wooden key in ninjutsu mode, and I jumped right when killed needed monster. No points, no key, no lives.

I have been playing for four months and I still haven't found the Book of Stars. While it is true that most of the PD's (parallel dimensions) are infinitely harder without it, who says you have to do PD's ? I think the trick is to stay out of them and just test your limits by getting as deep as you can into the Caverns. See, you've already managed to reach watermelons without BoS ... so you obviously have great potential as a player. I say you should stay away from all PD's (except a few easy ones, like the Council, PD26, and maybe PD11 or 13) until you find the book. That's what I do ... You are likely to see many more levels per game this way, so you'll beat the quests faster and you'll have a better chance of finding the book.

I'd go to PD43, and 15. They are not hard. More levels - more chances to get more rare items.

And they don't require the BoS

I hate PD15. For some reason, I'm always able to die there once or twice.

Here's my thoughts:

PD3: Very easy
PD6: No enemies
PD11: Not too difficult, but the last level's a pain
PD15: Hard, avoid
PD26: A little harder than PD11
PD43: Medium difficulty, at end
PD51: Quite hard, but and (gives and extra life) at end
PD72: Medium difficulty, last level's quite hard
PD72.2: Very easy
PD92: No enemies, and puts you at a better spot for 93
PD97: Hard, but it skips 98, which is harder Also has
