The whole PD51 is a lot of risk for 400k and 2 lives. I usually don't die there (once I've played it a hundred times) more than once or twice so I'm always on the winning side .

Same for me except for the 100 times .. and with a littlebit of luck you don't die at all and it gives you 2 extra lifes and almost 500k

So maybe PD 51 is the only way I'll ever get to pyramid level 1?

I did play PD 51 quite awhile ago while trying to get the controller and the jewel. Haven't been there since getting both once. A death on 51.8 (the level with 8 fruits) is virtually certain and multiple deaths quite probable. Level 51.9 is even worse. In dozens of attempts, I never once came close to making it through the initial fall without a bubble. But I suppose I could just sacrifice one life, and use the bubble to fall through to the next level. That costs only the controller (20k points) and a while saving perhaps half a dozen lives.

What is this second extra life you're talking about? I saw only one, on the level before the controller.

That extra life is only there if your frame rate is under a certain level. You can use a cpu-killer to get you framerate down and thus gain the extra life
You have to put your framerate down in the previous level(51. to get the life, not in the level that actually contains it. If you see the golden igor it's safe to put your framerate back to normal and get it

I also found an actually goos use for 2p mode. In hell where you can either go for the UE or get the pad, have one person stand near the pad, and the other bomb the incan block, then have the person near the pad get the pad and move on.
