I think getting

and then trying to finish your game as well as possible is a great way to get new high scores at a certain skill level.
When I started doing Hell runs, I immediately went for 3m in Hell, which means ~2.3m in 54. Granted, I did it for the lives, and it comes from a time where I only had 1 game per day and had to make it count.
But it set me up for a good score when I left Hell.
I remember one game where I had a really good run, I got

with 3.8m points and 8 extra lives left, and just decided to try and end it with as good a score as possible. That game ended with a score of ~6m I think, even though I hadn't ever even gotten to 5m before.
