Breaking the 80-90 plateau

Pyramid level: 2 476

The last 10 or 15 times I've played, the game has always gone exactly the same way: I get to level 80 without dying much, and then I always die before level 90. I know I just need more practice... except that practicing those levels means I need to spend nearly an hour playing through the rest of the game! There's not much for me to do -- I've completed every PD I can reach (except Hell!) and every quest that I can, except the ones where I'm waiting for coeff.5 items.

Do you experienced players have any advice? Are there any earlier PDs that are good practice for levels 70-90? Or anything else I can do to keep the first 70 levels from being a repetitive grind?

See if this helps a bit.

I die a lot in the upper 90s, and have been stuck there for ages. I find my ability to play well waxes and wanes. Buy a few games, and play a couple in a row. Waiting a day between playing doesn't do much good.

Watch videos on how it's done also. That's invaluable to beating a level.

Thank you for the advice! I have seen that video, but it's helpful to know that it's regarded as a good guide. I learned a number of things from it, but right now it looks like I'm using the right strategy for all the levels... I just can't pull it off. I have a feeling that if I look deeper into that video, there may be more for me to learn, regarding the player's small-scale tactics for evasion, moving precisely, etc. We'll have to see!

Maybe you can tell us which levels you struggle the most. For example 81, 82 and 83 should be easy. How do you die on the hard for you levels - pear bombs; fireball; drop out of the level.

Thanks again for taking an interest. I've taken some notes and made some recordings of myself playing, and I've concluded that my deaths break down something like this:

1/4 for no good reason: my finger twitches wrong, or I'm off by a few pixels or a tenth of a second and run into an enemy that was completely avoidable.

3/8 due either to pear bomb / teleporter combinations, or to getting hit by strawberries, usually when I accidentally leave the last one alive in a hard-to-reach place. I'm terrible at dodging strawberry seeds. I can reduce these deaths by being careful, but then I die just as much from taking too long and getting fireballed.

1/8 due to focusing too closely on whatever I'm trying to do, and getting blindsided by an apple or lemon shot from the other side of the screen.

1/4 levels where you have to very carefully jump across narrow platforms. I've always been extremely bad at small, precise movements.

levels where I frequently lose lives, and don't seem to be improving with practice:

43 - not good at landing on that single square while also avoiding the apple
62 - I actually am getting better at this one, but it's a good example of a level where I can either move quickly, and get killed, or move carefully, and get fireballed.
73 - there doesn't seem to be anything difficult about this level, but I frequently run out of time and get fireballed.
78 - Just unsteadiness in my hands.
84 - It's hard to keep track of all the directions bombs can come from! And when I do succeed, I run out of time.
85 - Something ganks me as I fall through the teleporter.
88 - Strawberry problems.
I've gotten to 90, 91, and 92 a few times, and I die over and over. Pineapples are hard.

(there are a bunch of other levels where I die frequently, but at least I'm gradually getting better at those).

Well, 50 games later, I can reliably get to about level 92. At this rate, I should get to Tuber after ~100 more hours of play.

I'd gladly pay 2 or 3 109 per game for a mode that let you start on level 60, even if the items and points you got didn't count and the game ended at level 99. Without that, I'm thinking about quitting, because I'm just getting so frustrated playing the first half of the game over and over. Everyone who can finish the game has my sincere admiration!

In retrospect that last post was kind of excessively whiny, and I apologize for it. :?

Let this be a lesson, kids: don't rage-quit, and don't rage-post either!

Dealing with the strawberries of level 88:

:fleche: Wait for the bottom strawberry to lend the ball to his playmate.
:fleche: Right after the upper berry gets the ball, manage to kick a bomb to the middle of the platform, making the strawberry fall to death. If the bomb is too near the wall the berry will stop at the bottom platform, and it's a pain whenever it happens.
:fleche: Wait for the bottom berry to throw the ball at you.
:fleche: Right after it throws the ball at you fall and place a bomb at its platform before falling at the bottom-most platform. If you're not godspeed at this part, it might throw a very-hard-to avoid ball at you right before the bomb explodes.
:fleche: After that, exterminate the Bombinos yourself.

Enjoy.
