I've observed that when I kill multiple enemies with one blue bomb, the game _almost_ always treats it as if I'd killed them in the right order to get the big crystal. But sometimes it doesn't! Does anyone know why that is?

It's possible that both enemies aren't falling off the bottom of the screen at exactly the same time, but I don't know whether that's it or not.

Its because the enemies don't fall off the screen at the same time. It is possible to knock multiple enemies off when they are on two different levels, so the one which was on the lower level will fall first, and that could make you miss the order. If they are on the same level it should work though

Also if you kill a few enemies with blue bomb you must remember, that pineapple falls faster and will always be 1st defeated.

Actually, it should be easy to remember that pineapples fall the fastest, because they're bigger & heavier.

This doesn't make much sense. Watermelons are much heavier than pineapples, yet they (thankfully) don't fall as fast.

But, the pineapples stomp, and the watermelons fly.
