Just figured I'd post this, although I have no definitive proof to back it up. I figured I'd try going through the game and getting the lowest score I could possibly get. I was wondering if maybe score had a direct correlation with the rarity of the items dropped. Usually when playing through the game my score has been pretty good, so what would happen if I made it to higher levels with a lousy score. I made one exception to the score - that if rare items did appear, I'd get them even if they were worth a lot of points. Here's what I figure:

I made it to level 86 with a score of less than 100,000 points. You know, it's actually hard to avoid the crystals sometimes, they just like to fall on your head. Anyway until about level 60 I really got nothing good to write home about. Then a little later there were some notable items, but nothing truly important (things like robots and that big pink flower worth 7777 points and an earthworm, etc.) In the end, I'm let to believe score had nothing to do with it. If anyone finds different results, please post them! In the end, I'd say go for the higher score because you'll net a few more extra lives out of the whole mess.

Basing this conclusion on one run is not very accurate, you'll admit...

Every game I play the same thing happens- either I get a high score, or I get to a high level.

I dunno why, but anytime I get 2 or 3 in the same game, I get far but i rarely get much above a million points.
On the other hand, if I get high scores, say 700-800k by level 30, I always seem to lose lives more quickly and not get as far :/

I decided to try it out myself just now, and got more rare(r) items than usual...

And I couldn't even get to level 10 without getting 100k points (getting items). I had over a million by level 70 (without trying for crystals, mind you). Just getting the items was more than enough to get me past the million marker, and what's even funnier is that I was able to beat the game easily... I never realized just how often I go for the big crystals.

Oh, and I finally got -> <- these items unblocked. Now I'm just gonna be playing to get the damn Constellation book... only thing I have to look forward to.

Serious though gaining the extra bomb only helps if you die often, otherwise are enough to last forever.

well... I got to the 50s with only 10k points but it didn't seem to get me anywhere special. Ah well, worth a shot

Alright, well I just tried it out to the extreme. I came up with this conclusion. Score has nothing to do with the items you receive. HOWEVER, if you seem to be getting rare items, you'll probably get more because when they seem to come in waves. also seem to come 2 or so at a time.

Mostly its holding true that rare items are indeed rare, and though there are lots of rare items, getting a rare item is still rare.

Yup, if i get a before lvl 10 i get another one before lvl 20 80% of the time. Also, seem to be none at all, or loads durign a game

Oh yeah those powerups are the *only* reason I grab the sneaker, since it's timed. On one of those walkthroughs for the French version they have a few other ones that litter the field with crystals that are like 10k each. Jeez! On another note I finally unlocked on my last game. I'm just waiting for one more to finish the quest. Sigh, lol.

Did you guys find the Candy Cane (the one which is worth 100,000 or 150,000 points... Can't remember.)

It appeared on me, once, but I couldn't grab it

Was on a second game. Shows how it's available earlier but never really appears.
