As far as I know the effect also applies for items you don't pick... I don't use too often in the earlier levels, but it still appears more and less frequent in different times

Yeah, I tried using this theory in reverse, not picking up low point items in the hope that they won't appear as often so better items would appear...but they seem to pop up more often whether I pick them up or not

i think it works but only for the game you're playing for example if you take umbrellas or aces in the first level , you'll get more in the latest part of this game but when you launch another one i dont think you'll get bonus by taking the items in the game you've played before

I understand your English, but your guess is wrong. I have seen items appear more frequently for a lot of games in a row, then nearly vanishing and so on
