A little trick I learned...

If there are some of you who, like myself, have no partner for two-player mode but have to do everything yourself, this trick has helped me a TON. Frankly, it would help you even more if you DID have a partner due to the increased ease with which you could pull it off, but I know for myself, this little gem has gotten me out of many a tight spot.

First, on easy levels, find a ledge that you know the second player can't get hit, put him there, keep him there, and finish the level off with just the first player. Safe spots also mean that the second player isn't in danger of getting hit with projectiles, obviously. Some levels have these spots, some don't. Learn which ones do, and use them.

Second, on levels that don't have safe spots, move the players in unison. It's a lot easier to dodge a projectile or saw when both players jump the same time, as opposed to having to time two jumps at different times. Also easier to focus on one area of the screen than two. In addition, if you have your second player standing right behind or in the same spot as your first player, you can use the first player to "protect" the second from any enemies that might come towards you.

Finally, and this is the REAL trick that I learned (and since I never see it mentioned in here I'm actually not sure how many people know this) but here's something that has helped me clear boards a lot more efficiently: If player one creates a bomb, and player two kicks it, IT WILL DOUBLE IN SIZE AND EXPLOSION RADIUS, WITHOUT HURTING OR KNOCKING OFF BALANCE EITHER PLAYER.

It's like having unstable explosives turned on, without the "unstable" part of being knocked over if you get caught in your own bomb.

The same works if player two creates a bomb and player one kicks it.

For those of you who don't mind using a game up, try it on the very first level...it actually looks quite cool.

Anyways, thought I'd share, because I know that playing two-player mode with only one person is terribly difficult (especially in the later levels) and that these tricks have helped me immensely in my quest to unblock the two-player mirror and nightmare star.

Good luck!

...huh?

I'm pretty sure I made a post in this thread one or two hours ago. Where did it go?

What did you originally say?

I searched the forum and found another post by me that states almost the same thing, let me quote it:

Crap, I died in lvl47 or something. Anyway, mapping both keysets to my gamepad (using a program called JoyToKey) worked quite nice, the only problem was that the two guys enter each new level one second away from each other. So I had to realign them at the start of each level, that's tedious and sometimes dangerous.

The upside is that you can constantly use the big bombs that way. You know, the super bombs that you get when the other player kicks your bomb. They have a doubled blast radius and double impact. Basically things go big boom when using these :D

The most awesome thing I've seen is using the big bomb trick on a black bomb. Since big bombs take shorter to explode, you basically get a better black bomb with the timer of a normal white bomb.

I think I'm going to try this again someday, it was fun.

So yeah. Map both players to the same set of keys and you will have it much easier. Plus you always have the big bombs when you kick a bomb.

Seeing that this post I quoted was from Nov 2008 reminded me that I could try two-player mode again... I think I got better by now (even though I still fail to reach Tuber, but I blame the BoS).

Mapping keys only works of you have a joystick or something...I tried mapping both sets of keys to the same controls but it didn't work.

I know, I meant the gamepad keys... buttons would be a better word. Playing Hammerfest with a gamepad actually works pretty good, like playing Mario on the Super Nintendo :D

I find playing with a good keyboard better than using a joystick. On battle games (Guilty Gear series) there are these key sequences that I find harder with joystick. And I've played a lot :).

Yes, but this game doesn't need any serious key combinations ;)

And I'm using this program to map the keys to my gamepad. It's simple and gets the job done.

"Collecting gamepads with a gamepad..."

Reminds me of Parallel 43 -> That is CLEARLY levels made with Bubble Bobble in thought

Hammerfest
43.5

Bubble Bobble
Level 10

Hammerfest
43.4

Bubble Bobble
Level 25

Just two examples

The controller at the End shouldnt be a Gamecube Controller, It should be the Nintendo 8-bit Controller :noon:
