In the original Super Mario (and Super Mario 3), stomping or killing eight enemies in a row would earn you an extra life. It's a bit of a stretch, but I liked it, and frankly I think it's a bit of a break from the wall-o-items.

Not entirely true, because stomping/kicking the turtle shell are two additional 'hits'. Stomp (100pts), kick (200pts), 1st hit (500pts), etc. But if you stomp it and wait you would get only 100pts for kicking and 200pts for the 1st hit. Constantly stomping on enemies also can give you lifes and you could glitch those turtles at the end of some levels and stomp on them like a gazzillion times and have infinite lives.
