if you consistently get in 54.8 so that all the enemies on the left pile up on the bottom and you can't go by without killing the strawberry which will get you GO'd before you know it because of the pineapple+other strawberry, is there any hope?

Yep

Kill the strawberry on the left; wait on the left until the strawberry shoots. If the road is clear, go to where the right strawberry is and kick the bomb on the way down. If you're lucky, the strawberry will end up on the bottom platform. If so, head back to where the blue bomb changer is. Kick bombs repeatedly and dodge the strawberry seeds/pineapple shocks until the strawberry is dead, along with whatever bananas/lemons are down there. Then, head over to the right, and kill everything from there

54.4 on my one and so far only attempt. Definitely not my best shot though. It was a throwaway game going in (that's why I decided to explore in the first place) and lost two lives on 54.3.
