What you have both said is not necessarily true. If you get the last letter before the fireball has finished it's blinking cycle, it will come up from the bottom blinking until the cycle is done.

If you bomb, say, two bombinos, and then lay a bomb that hits a new two bombinos as well as the last two, you will get cristals up to yellow (4 of them) even though the first two will explode earlier.

same with multiple black bombs

You do get the combo, yes, but it doesn't count as a simultaneous kill (i.e. for giant crystal).
