As usual, the first half of my game went swimmingly, but I think this says enough about how it ended up...

Also, I missed a on level 96, which was frustrating, but I don't think I would have fared any better on level 98 anyway.

on 96 would take you to 99, not the horror that is 98.

You're right! That makes it even worse! I was pixels away from the umbrella that could have taken me to Tuber's doorstep, when a baby apricot fell on my head. At that point I was on my last life, and the fireball took it from me moments later. ~heavy sigh~ Well, there's always the next game.

Item I was trying to get when I lost my last life:

I really have no idea how to beat Ninjutsu mode. I've burned through hundreds of games over the last few months, never getting anywhere close, and I don't even feel like I'm making any kind of progress.

Recently I've been resetting if I die at any point before level 20, or if I don't have at least 9 lives banked by level 30, but even only taking good starts I've not yet even made it past the early 80s.

There always seems to be levels with impossible situations to actually kill the target without hitting anything else - no matter how long I wait or try to lure enemies I'm forced into losing at least one life to clear the level. When this happens so often I'm having a hard time believing making it to the end is even reasonably possible.

Has anyone active had any experience with trying these runs, or ever completed one?

I just tried it and got to level 80 ... had lots of stupid deaths tho, like just missing platforms and landing on enemies ...
I remember getting to the 90s tho, and I think I've beaten it before, but I'm not 100% sure. In some levels the distribution of "skulled" and "hearted" enemies does make a huge change, while you definitely also need a lot of skill, as great control about your bombs is probably more essential than in any other game mode.

I'll try recording a game at the weekend and see how many deaths were avoidable and how.

Maybe I just don't have the skill to pull it off but I do get frustrated a lot with the situations it gives me

I mean with hindsight I could have sacrificed lives to get the top one and one of the others out the way but I didn't anticipate it being so damn unfair with stomps, and that would have left me in bad shape for the rest of the game anyway.

Ugh.

This is getting ridiculous... Day after day, I keep getting game-overs at 1.8 or 1.9 million, and with something like (*)RISTAL... It seems like every game I play has been ending that way, and it really gets on my nerves (especially if I know I've had a handful of stupid, avoidable deaths earlier in the game).

Am I the only one who gets increasingly frustrated, the closer I am to an extra life when I lose? Does anyone else feel that way? Or am I too emotionally invested here?

Well, for sure this game has the faculty to be very ironic, but just take it easy, otherwise the more you focus on your last life, the more you will lose it in a silly way.

One good technique for that could be to mask the lives with a post-it on your screen.

Another point with the 2M life, I was in the same kind of situation as you before, so I tried to learn a few more feasible orders so that I have a better probability to hit the 2M before the 90's, where you don't want to take extra risks for earning the 100k or 200k that are missing.

And don't forget that frustration is what makes the achievement so exciting and satisfying once you finally reach your goal, whatever it is.

So never give up, keep zen, and your training will finally be fruitful.
