and noticed one thing.... on the quest it says "the first key" but i got the "rigor dangerous" key first

... and Gordon's Key even earlier, I presume.

Can you lose lots of lives in Tuber?

Luckily I got through the game again. After NM, this normal mode feels like easy slow motion.

Sick of spending every game I play in grueling, heartless, picky picky nightmare mode, I decided to do play in nightmare/mirror mode just for fun.

Well! I guess I can beat Tuber without dying! For the first time since forever I was actually getting cristal more than once per game (I think I got 4 or 5), but I still ended up entering level 100 & 101 with no lives. But, as you can see it wasn't an issue! And I think what really brought it home was getting ace of spades on 95 and a red umbrella on 96. Those two levels are major... . I always lose life on those levels, so... DOES MY VICTORY COUNT? With all this luck I mean, is it fair? Well, look in my fridge and I don't think it really matters much.

If it's a question of can I do it again, then well, I'm only getting better after all.

I knew you could do it. And in Mirror Mode, at that ! (I think that fact makes up for all the luck you had ... so yes, it definitely counts.) Way to be optimistic ...
